What I’m watching: THE HOLIDAY

Pretty appropriate, I thought, to be watching THE HOLIDAY, starring Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Jack Black. I loved this movie for many many reasons, although I have to admit that I did struggle a bit with Jack Black as a convincing love interest for Kate Winslet’s character. The things I loved the most about this movie…

  • How Kate Winslet’s character had the time and the inclination to care about her elderly neighbour and learn about what a fantastic and wonderful life he’d led. All to often I think we get too caught up in our busy lives and we forget to stop and listen to our elders and learn their stories. Everyone we meet has life experience different to ours and I reckon we can learn something from everybody if we just take the time to listen.
  • How Cameron Diaz’s character was so mecurial. She really wanted and needed to get away from home and her cheating partner and yet once she was where she thought she wanted to be she couldn’t wait to get back on a plane to the US.
  • How Jude Law’s character interacted with his beautiful daughters. I think one of the most precious scenes in this film was with all three of them in bed and there wasn’t so much as an inappropriate suggestion about any of it. We have to deal with so much horror in our day to day lives it was lovely to see a widowed dad just being able to be a dad with his girls without fear of recrimination, or overt suggestion, that to love and comfort his children as a parent should, is wrong.

So yeah, all in all I really did enjoy this film. I love a good happy ending and this delivered on all levels of happy endings for me.

What about you? Seen anything you’ve really enjoyed lately?

  1. I don’t make it to the theaters much anymore (due to toddler) so I’m way behind on my movies. I thrive on borrowing older releases from my parents. One I enjoyed recently was The Lake House with Sandra Bullock and Keaneu Reeves…ranks right up there with my favorite romances (The Notebook is my absolute favorite romance.)

I enjoyed The Holiday as well!

  2. Hi Allison, thanks for dropping by my blog. I rarely make it out to the theatre myself and we do rent DVDs fairly often. There are so many movies that don’t even make it to the picture theatres which are still well worth a watch, don’t you think?

I really liked The Lake House, but I think my all time favourite romance movie to date would be Sweet Home Alabama (although I really loved Ghost, too, but can’t classify that as a romance because there is no happily-ever-after ending :-( unless you count the hereafter!) Ooh, now you’ve got me thinking of all the DVDs on my shelf. Might be time for a re-watch of a whole lot of them! LOL!

  3. Yvonne, I agree 100% with your highlights of this movie. I found the other realtionships — KW’s character with the elderly neighbour, and JL’s with his daughters — much more emotionally compelling than the romances. A lovely feel-good romance.

There are some movies coming out now I’d LOVE to see (starting with PS I Love You) but they’ll have to be DVD jobs for after the busy season, unfortunately, because I LOVE going to the movies and the big-screen experience.

  4. Hi Bron! I agree with you about PS I LOVE YOU. Might need an Artist’s date with that one.

  5. Last week my friends were home for 5 days. They are truck drivers and were on the road for 28 days. We watched Pirates of the Carribean 3(Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom, need I say more. They did leave it open for another one though), Miami Vice(violent) National Treasure(great humour mixed in), 3:10 to Yuma(Russell Crowe as a gunslinger, yum), American Gangster(very, very Violent)

  6. Hi Christa! I’m looking forward to seeing Pirates III, although I still need to see the end of Pirates II! I was on a flight to Sydney in Nov last year when it was on, and somehow, in the preflight palaver, I missed the end! Argh!

3:10 to Yuma sounds interesting. Russell Crowe is always worth a watch.

I think I’d have had my hands over my eyes in Miami Vice and American Gangster if I’d been watching movies with you the other day. I’m really not into movies with tons of violence, the images tend to burn themselves into my mind, and I unashamedly admit I prefer the feel-good stuff. :-)

  7. Hi Yvonne, sounds like we have similar tastes, I also love Sweet Home Alabama! However my top favourite is Serendipity with Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack. I think it’s because we know right from the start that these two people are just meant to be together, but events keep getting in their way big-time. In fact, for most of the film it’s hard to imagine that they’ll ever get together again - although they have to, since it’s a happy-ever-after romance! I can watch that one over and over (I have even watched it twice in succession once - I got to the end and just wanted to start it over again!)

  8. Hi Cherry! Thanks for dropping by. I haven’t seen Serendipity but I’ll make sure to rent it. Anything that you’ve seen that often must be a good watch.
